Situated at the junction of Provincial Highways No.2 and No.737 between the town of Berwyn and Whitelaw, is a wonderful hamlet full of an interesting history. In 1924, the E.D. and B.C. railroad was extended as far as Whitelaw. Brownvale was created as an intermediate urban centre to serve the rich agricultural area. John Brown was the owner fo the homestead chosen as the site for the hamlet. The name "Brownvale" was chosen to honour him and the "vale" was added because the land slopes away from the hamlet site in three directions.

Once Brownvale was established, businesses began to move into the community. F.E. Algar's general store opened in 1926, with the post office opening right behind it. The Grey Eagle School was moved into Brownvale and used as the community's school for a number of years until a new educational facility could be built.

The growth of Brownvale has been, and continues to be closely tied to agriculture and the farming that occurs in the area. It has long been a service centre for the farming community in this part of the Peace Country.
